FRESNO, Calif. – The Portland Pilots (8-3) dropped the final game of their series against the Fresno State Bulldogs (6-5) 7-1. The Bulldogs officially take the series.
Caleb Franzen takes his second loss of the year for the Pilots after giving up five runs (three earned) in four innings. Franzen also added four strikeouts. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs got solid production from their bullpen once again, with Roman Angelo officially earning the win in six innings of work.
The Pilots had no problem racking up hits with 11 on the day, but struggled to bring runners home. Briley Knight shined at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI single. Nine Pilots, including Knight, recorded a hit, but no Pilots had more than one.
After failing to string together any runs in the prior game, the Pilots got to work early on Sunday. They totaled three hits in the first inning, including the RBI single from Knight. That score gave Portland a 1-0 lead early.
But the Bulldogs didn't wait long to get on the board. After a walk and an error put two players on base, Travis Welker hit an RBI single right up the middle that brought both runners home. Just like that, Fresno State had the lead.
They took the lead in the second and built on that in the fourth. Josh Lauck stepped up to the plate with two runners already on for Fresno State. Lauck preceded to hit a moonshot over the wall in left-center field wall to put the Bulldogs up 5-1.
Fresno State scored their final runs in the sixth inning. Zach Morgan and Ivan Luna each had RBI hits that brought in two runs and put their lead at six. The Pilots had their chances late, loading the bases in the eighth inning and putting two more on base in the top of the ninth. But the Pilots just couldn't find the runs, falling 7-1.
The Pilots will be back in Oregon this week for a one-off game against the Oregon Ducks in Eugene. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. with live stats and streaming options available at PortlandPilots.com.
