The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel announced this week several rule changes and updates, most notably the elimination of overtime during the regular season for men's and women's soccer. The changes will go into effect next fall for the 2022 season.
After 90 minutes of play, regular season games with the score tied will officially end in a tie. Before the change, teams would play two 10-minute overtime periods utilizing the golden goal format where if one team scored a goal, the game would end with the scoring team as the victor. If neither team scored, the game would end in a tie.
Along with this, in postseason matches, such as conference tournaments and NCAA postseason, games will no longer be determined by golden goal. Instead, teams will play two 10-minute overtime periods and go to a penalty-kick shootout if the score is still tied. All subs in the final five minute will stop the clock as well in overtime.
Below are other rule updates from the panel:
- Video review has been expanded to include whether a foul was inside or outside the penalty box
- The protest rule has been expanded to allow the review o violent behavior II and fighting red cards. The review would determine whether the aforementioned violations should be changed to a violent behavior I red card, making a two-game suspension only one game.
- The NCAA Men's and Women's Soccer Committee rescinded a change that would've prevented players from reentering a match after being subbed out. The committee had agreed on a change in February, but after hearing feedback from the membership during the comment period, the committee decided to "have more dialogue on the subject."
