PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots (18-11 , 5-5 WCC) took the first of three games against the San Diego Toreros (18-10, 6-4 WCC) 6-2. The win puts the Pilots back at .500 in conference play and snaps a three-game losing streak.
Brett Gillis was stellar once again on the mound, earning his sixth win of the year after going eight innings with only two runs and three hits allowed along with seven strikeouts. His six wins is among the most in the WCC.
The Pilots had six runs off 10 hits this Friday, with four Pilots earning two hits or more. Trace Tammaro stood out, going 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI's. Spencer Scott and Jake Holcroft also each went 2-for-4 with an RBI, with Holcroft getting two doubles. Jake Tsukada was also 2-for-4 with two doubles.
Portland started the scoring with a big third inning. Scott earned his RBI hit that brought home Tsukada from second to start things off. Then Tammaro stepped to the plate later that inning and hit a two-run bomb the put the Pilots up 3-0 at the end of the third.
The Pilots scored twice more in the bottom of the fifth. Tammaro once again brought Scott home, this time with a deep single to right field. Holcroft made sure that Tammaro hit home plate later in the inning with an RBI double down the left field line. The Pilots held a 5-0 lead through five innings.
San Diego finally responded in the sixth inning, with Caleb Ricketts hitting a moonshot over the right field wall to cut Portland's lead to three. The Pilots extended their lead the next inning with a wild play. Ben Patacsil softly hit a ball to Gabe Maya, who overthrew Kevin Sim and sent the ball way past first base. Patacsil sprinted home as San Diego struggled to corral the ball, with Patacsil making it just in time. That wild score put the score at its final of 6-2.
The Pilots and Toreros will play a doubleheader to finish the series off starting tomorrow at 1 p.m. The second game will start 30 minutes after the first game. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stats and video.
