PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots men's soccer team has announced their schedule for the Fall 2022 season, which features 13 home matches (three exhibitions) at Merlo Field and several matchups against perennial top-25 opponents, eight of which made the 2021 NCAA Tournament.
"We are excited to announce our 2022 schedule which is an incredibly exciting and challenging gauntlet against the best of the best," Portland head coach Nick Carlin-Voigt said. "Last year we took on one of the most challenging schedules in the country from an S.O.S. (strength of schedule) standpoint and it helped us secure an NCAA Tournament home game and at-large bid, which we know are very hard to come by. I believe you have to schedule as hard as possible and fight for results against elite teams to become a tournament team at the end of the year. We have scheduled four Top-20 RPI Games out of league and overall play eight Top 50 RPI games from last fall. I know our players are excited to test themselves this fall as we work together to reach our full potential."
The Pilots will play three exhibition games at home, starting with the Southern Oregon Raiders on Aug. 12, followed by matchups against the Oregon State Beavers on Aug. 15 and the Washington Huskies on Aug. 19. Both Oregon State and Washington were ranked in the top three to end last season, with the Pilots playing the No. 3 Huskies twice, including in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Portland lost both contests.
Portland will officially open the regular season on Friday, Aug. 26 against the Central Arkansas Sugar Bears. The Pilots follow that up with a road contest against the Indiana Hoosiers. The Hoosiers were consistently ranked in the top 10 last season and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the tournament before falling in extra time to Washington.
The Pilots will be back home for their following three matches, welcoming the Cal Poly Mustangs on Friday, Sept. 2, the Seton Hall Pirates on Monday, Sept. 5 and the UCLA Bruins on Saturday, Sept. 10. Carlin-Voigt – who was the associate head coach for the Bruins before coming to Portland – and the Pilots defeated UCLA last season 1-0 for their first road regular season victory ever over the Bruins.
After that, Portland will take on the Denver Pioneers in Denver on Friday, Sept. 16. They will then enjoy a four-game homestand, welcoming West Virginia on Monday, Sept. 19. The Mountaineers went 12-3-6 and reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament last season. The Pilots then host Cal State Bakersfield on Friday, Sept. 23 and Utah Tech on Sunday, Sept. 25 before opening WCC play against the Saint Mary's Gaels at Merlo Field on Friday, Sept. 30. The Pilots and Gaels both tied for third last season in the WCC.
The Pilots will travel to San Francisco for their next WCC contest on Oct. 8 against the hometown San Francisco Dons. Following that, the Pilots will be back in Oregon, heading down to Corvallis to take on the Oregon State Beavers on Oct. 15. The Beavers finished last season 14-2-4 and were the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. They fell to the No. 8 Clemson Tigers in penalty kicks in the Elite Eight.
Portland hosts the Loyola Marymount Lions, one of two teams to tie the Pilots for third last season in WCC play, on Oct. 22. and will take on the Gonzaga Bulldogs and San Diego Toreros in their final games of October on the 26
th and the 29
th respectively.
The Pilots' home finale will take place on Saturday, Nov. 5 against the defending WCC Champions, the Santa Clara Broncos. The Broncos were one of the two teams – the Pilots being the other – to make the NCAA Tournament after finishing 12-2-4 overall and undefeated in WCC play at 5-0-2. Portland will conclude the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 12 against the Pacific Tigers in Stockton.
