STOCKTON, Calif. – The Portland Pilots (32-23) played their final game of the 2022 season on Saturday, falling 3-0 to the No. 1 seed Gonzaga Bulldogs (36-16) in the WCC Tournament.
Despite the loss, the Pilots finish still with the most wins they've had since the 2010 season. Their 17 conference wins in the regular season and 18 wins against conference opponents overall were also the most in program history. Their appearance this season in the WCC Tournament was the first in program history as well.
Peter Allegro took the loss in his first start of both his career and the season. He went five innings with five hits and three runs allowed and three strikeouts. Caleb Franzen. Joey Gartrell and Brock Gillis each made appearances as well.
Portland's struggles hindered their success. They had just four hits and no runs scored, striking out 17 times. Jake Holcroft, Spencer Scott, Sam Brown, Jake Tsukada and Ben Patacsil were the only Pilots to record hits, with Patacsil being the only batter with at least two hits.
Gonzaga put the first run on the board in the second inning. Tyler Rando hit a big double to right center field, clearing the way for Savier Pinales to get home and make it 1-0 Gonzaga.
The Zags expanded that lead to three with two more runs in the fourth inning. Grayson Sterling went yard over the wall in right center, hitting a solo shot to put Gonzaga's lead at two. Dylan Johnson followed that up with a sacrifice fly later in the inning that made it 3-0 Zags.
Even though they got overall quality pitching, the Pilots struggled at the plate. William Kempner for the Zags was stellar on the bump, striking out 14 batters in 5.2 innings with only three hits allowed.
The Pilots had their chances against the Zags bullpen. They managed to put runners in scoring position in the seventh and eighth innings, including loading the bases in the seventh. But the Pilots just couldn't get the runs they needed. The Zags added four more runs in the final inning to buoy their lead and win 7-0.
