FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Cathal Doyle finished third in his 1,500-meter quarterfinals heat to automatically qualify for nationals Friday at the NCAA West Preliminary hosted at John McConnell Field. Doyle recorded a time of 3:42.84 and will now prepare for the semifinals at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships June 8-11 hosted at Hayward Field in Eugene.

Doyle, also a 1,500-meter nationals qualifier last season, makes it 29 out of 30 years that Portland has had at least one representative at the NCAA Championships (2000 the exception).

Riley Osen just missed advancing in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase as his time of 8:42.79 made him the first runner outside of qualification for nationals.

The Pilots will conclude action at the NCAA West Prelims on Saturday with Veerle Bakker looking to qualify in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase at 3:40 p.m. (PT) and then Laura Pellicoro will run in the 800-meter quarterfinals at 5:05 p.m. (PT).
