EUGENE, Ore. – Cathal Doyle finished eighth in his 1,500-meter semifinals heat Wednesday on the opening day of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted at Hayward Field. Doyle recorded a time of 3:42.56 which was 19th overall among semifinal competitors. The top five runners from each of the two heats and next two best times advanced to Friday's finals.
Doyle, making his second consecutive nationals appearance in the event, made it 29 out of 30 years that Portland has had at least one representative at the NCAA Championships (2000 the exception). The Dublin, Ireland native placed 13th in the semifinals of the 2021 national meet. He owns the school record in the 1,500 with a time of 3:38.05 and is fourth in the Pilot record books in the 800-meter run (1:49.58).
Portland will have its second and final individual qualifier compete at nationals tomorrow when Laura Pellicoro toes the line in the 800-meter women's semifinals. Pellicoro
broke the school record at the NCAA West Prelims to punch her ticket.
