SAN MATEO, Calif. – For the third time in four weeks, the Portland Pilots men's soccer team has won a WCC Player of the Week award, this time with goalkeeper George Tasouris winning defensive player of the week. This is his first win this season and the fifth win in four weeks for the Pilots.
Tasouris earns the award after helping the Pilots earn a shutout on the road against the No. 9 Denver Pioneers, collecting five saves. It's the third shutout of the year for the Pilots and the second in a row against a ranked opponent, with the Pilots shutting out the then-No. 15/6 UCLA Bruins at home in a 2-0 win. The Pilots are second in the WCC in shutouts while Tasouris ranks third in save percentage (.778).
The Pilots have dominated the player of the week awards this season. They swept the awards the past two weeks, with Gurman Sangha and George Tasouris winning offensive player of the week honors and Kevin Bonilla and Delentz Pierre winning defensive player of the week awards. Nationally, Cambridge also made the TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week and earned player of the week for the website last week. For the conference, it's the first time since 2018 that one team has had a player earn WCC Player of the Week three times in a row.
The Pilots are unbeaten through six games for the first time since 2018 and are currently ranked 13
th in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll and 14
th in the TopDrawerSoccer Top 25 poll. They're 3-0-3 heading into their matchup tonight against the West Virginia Mountaineers.
