PORTLAND, Ore. -- Haylee Andrews and Alex Fowler combined to score 46 total points - 69.7 percent of Portland's points - but the Pilots fell to the No. 20 Gonzaga Bulldogs 73-66 at home Saturday.
Andrews led the Pilots (12-6, 6-1) with 27 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals. Her 27 was a season-high. Fowler tacked on 19 points, five assists and two steals and McKelle Meek helped out with seven points off the bench.
The Portland offense made hay from beyond the arc, making eight threes on 18 attempts. Andrews hit a career-high four 3-pointers for the Pilots in the contest.
How It Happened
After falling behind 17-10, Portland went on a 5-0 run with 1:43 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Fowler, to narrow its deficit to 17-15. The Pilots' deficit remained the same as they entered the second quarter trailing 19-17.
Gonzaga kept adding to that lead, building a 30-25 advantage before Portland went on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a three from Andrews, to take a 31-30 lead. The two teams traded baskets to even it up at 35-35 heading into halftime. Portland was strong from deep in the period, knocking down five 3-point shots to account for 15 of its 18 points.
Gonzaga proceeded to take over in the third quarter and the Pilots entered the fourth trailing 55-50. Gonzaga kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 70-56 advantage before Portland went on a 6-0 run to shrink the deficit to 70-62 with 2:33 to go in the contest. The Pilots kept their comeback going, but Gonzaga managed to hold on for the 73-66 win.
