PORTLAND, Ore. – For the third straight season, the fifth time under head coach Nick Carlin-Voigt and the 19
th time in program history, the Portland Pilots are set to play in the NCAA Tournament. They will host the either the Seattle U Redhawks or the Oregon State Beavers on Sunday, Nov. 19 at 5 p.m.
"We're really excited," Carlin-Voigt said. "It's been a big goal of ours to have a regular season and a record that deserves a bye in the tournament. We know we're going to have a tough game ahead -- in the NCAA Tournament, nothing is easy. Really proud of our guys for having such a strong regular season and earning this opportunity to play in front of our fans and create more Merlo Magic."
Because the Pilots finished in the Top 16, they earned a first-round bye and will host at least this round. Every subsequent opponent that isn't ranked will also come to Merlo Field if the Pilots advance. This is the first time the Pilots have earned a first-round bye since the 1988 season.
It's been another exciting year on The Bluff, as the Pilots finished with a 12-4 record overall and 5-2 in WCC play to post their second straight season with 12 wins or more. It's the first time they've posted back-to-back seasons of 12 wins or more since the 2001 and 2002 seasons. It's the fifth time since Nick Carlin-Voigt took over as head coach that the Pilots have posted at least 10 wins in a season. Portland's 28-game unbeaten streak at home is the longest in program history and in the nation.
Statistically, the Pilots are one of the most impressive teams in the nation. They led the WCC in 10 different statistical categories and ranked second nationally in assists (54) and assists per game (3.38), third in total points (144) and goals per game (2.81), fourth in goal differential (33), fifth in total goals (45) and 11
th in win-loss-tied percentage (.750). Individually the Pilots have several national leaders, with Jacob Babalai ranking 12
th in goals nationally (12) and Kevin Bonilla ranks seventh in assists with 10. Portland's 54 assists are the most in program history for a single season, and their 45 goals are the most through 16 games since the 1995 season where Portland made the College Cup.
