PORTLAND, Ore. -- The No. 11 Portland Pilots saw their season end with a 3-0 loss to the Oregon State Beavers in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Portland finishes the year at 12-5-0 after the loss.
"We had an electric atmosphere tonight at Merlo and I want to thank everyone who came out to support us not just tonight but all season long," Portland Head Coach Nick Carlin-Voigt said. "We had the nation's longest winning streak at home at 28 games and hadn't lost a game in over two years at Merlo which speaks to the success we have had here at home and the dominate brand of attacking exciting football we have built. The margins in the tournament in high-level tight games are very small and you saw that tonight. Our guys are disappointed as they are highly competitive, but we didn't have our usual energy at the start and normal urgency for all 90 minutes, which is what it takes to advance this time of year. We missed some key details we usually execute.
"Not the way we wanted our season to end for our seniors to close out their career at Merlo but it doesn't take away from what this group has accomplished. I'm proud of how they carried themselves all season long, not just for the wins but for how they grew and evolved and how they represent our University."
How it Happened
Logan Farrington scored two goals for Oregon State, with the first coming in the ninth minute. The Pilots held the Beavers scoreless for the rest of the half.
The match was even until Oregon State strung together two more goals late in the second. Farrington scored his second goal in the 65th minute and Andrew De Gannes scored in the 79th to put it at its final.
"Goals change games and the difference tonight is OSU finished their chances and we didn't," Carlin-Voigt said. "We had been down before at half so we didn't panic and thought we came out in the second half much brighter and assertive, believing we would equalize and then go ahead. The game can be cruel as their first goal hits the post and trickles in while our shot from Diego Rosas has their keeper beat, hits the post but bounces out. Then we miss a great chance eight yards from an excellent Diego cross that we usually finish and they come down and score. That's the difference. They have a top striker, who will be a top pick in MLS and he made two plays tonight, so credit to OSU for advancing. It's heartbreaking in a lot of ways as we have a special group of people, not just a top team. These guys built a special bond and became a real team in every sense of the word and I know they made our fans proud. We will learn from this and be back next year. Go Pilots!"
