PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots had three players earn CSC Academic All-District honors on Tuesday, with Buba Fofanah, Nick Denley and Julian Conze all making the team. It's the first time all three student-athletes have made the team.
The all-district teams recognize athletes who have excelled both on the field and in the classroom, with the program honoring student-athletes at all the NCAA Division levels and the NAIA level. To qualify, a student-athlete must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher, must be in at least their sophomore season athletically and also must have played in at least 90% of contests or started in 67% of those contests. Select honorees are also nominated for All-American consideration.
Fofanah had a stellar season on the pitch, with nine goals and six assists for 24 points. Both his goal total and point total were second in the WCC, and nationally he was top 50 in both categories. He was the only Pilot this year to post at least five goals and five assists this year and earned All-WCC Second Team honors as well.
Denley and Conze, meanwhile, were both crucial as outside backs for the Pilots this year. Denley played in 15 matches with 13 starts while Conze played in 16 games with six starts. Denley recorded two assists as well, both coming in a dominant win over Gonzaga. They were crucial in leading a Pilot squad to a shutout percentage that ranked 12
th in the nation (.471) and a goals-against average that ranked 24
th (.882).
The Pilots had a stellar season on The Bluff, going 12-5 on the year and earning a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the third straight year and the fifth time under head coach Nick Carlin-Voigt. They earned a bye straight to the second round for the first time since 1988 and posted back-to-back seasons of 12 wins or more for the first time since the 2001 and 2002 seasons.
