PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Portland Pilots got a big boost from their freshmen in their 83-40 win over the Willamette Bearcats.
The Pilots (7-6) had three players score in double figures, led by Lainey Spear, who had a career game with 16 points, six rebounds and three blocks. Maisie Burnham tacked on 15 points and Rhyan Mogel helped out with a career-high 14 points and five assists off the bench.
Portland shared the ball well in Sunday's game, racking up 19 assists on 33 made field goals. Mogel's five assists paced the Pilots and Kianna Hamilton also added three assists of her own.
The Portland defense was fierce on Sunday, forcing 19 Willamette turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 24 points on the offensive end of the floor. Hamilton led the way individually for the Pilots with three steals.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 3-2 advantage, Portland went on an 11-0 run with 8:17 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Spear, to increase its lead to 14-2. The Pilots then added one point to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 21-8 advantage.
Portland kept its first quarter lead intact before going on an 11-0 run early in the quarter to increase its lead to 32-8. The Pilots proceeded to tack on five points to that lead and enjoyed a 47-18 advantage heading into halftime.
The Pilots maintained that lead before going on a 7-0 run to expand its lead further to 61-26 with 2:06 to go in the third. The Pilots held onto that lead for the rest of the frame and entered the fourth quarter with a 63-28 edge. The Pilots kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 83-40 win.
Game Notes
» The Pilots held the Bearcats to only 27.8% shooting from the field. It's the lowest field-goal percentage they've held an opponent to this year.
» The Pilots never trailed after taking their 3-2 lead in the first quarter.
» Portland recorded 19 total assists in the game.
» The Portland bench scored 52 of Portland's 83 points.
» Lainey Spear and Rhyan Mogel came off the bench to score 16 and 14 points, respectively. Both totals are career highs.
» Portland had a 48-27 edge on the boards in the win.
» The Portland defense forced 19 turnovers and added 11 steals. Kianna Hamilton tallied three of those steals.
» The Pilots were active in affecting shots on the defensive end, tallying five blocks as a team. Spear led the way with three rejections.
» Portland cleaned up on the offensive glass, collecting 15 offensive boards in the game.
» Portland got a career-high eight rebounds from Florence Dallow.
