COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- The Portland Pilots got a boost offensively from Nich Klemp and defensively from the whole pitching staff as they beat the No. 5 Texas A&M Aggies 4-1 in College Station. The win clinches the series for the Pilots, with the Aggies being the highest ranked opponent the Pilots have ever clinched a three-game series against.
Sophomore Jacob Dobmeier (1-0) got the win out of the bullpen for Portland (5-1, ). The right-hander went 3.1 shutout innings, giving up one hit, one walk and striking out one. Junior Brock Gillis started the ballgame and went 4.2 innings, surrendering one run on four hits, walking five and striking out four. Peter Allegro earned his first save of the by closing out the final inning.
Nich Klemp went 3-for-5 at the plate, adding a double. Spencer Scott put together a noteworthy performance as well, going 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and the two RBI's that won the game for Portland. Henry Muench was the only other batter to record multiple hits for Portland, going 2-for-4.
How it Happened
The Pilots got on the scoreboard first with one run in the fourth inning. Portland got an RBI single from senior Briley Knight, scoring Klemp from third base.
The Aggies then tied the ballgame at one before the Pilots came back to reclaim their advantage in the sixth inning. Portland pushed two runs across on a two-run double off the bat of Scott that brought home Evan Scavotto and junior Christian Cooney, which brought the Pilots lead to 3-1.
Portland held Texas A&M without a run before building their lead to 4-1 in the ninth inning off a wild pitch. Portland held on for the win.
