PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland women's tennis team picked up its fifth consecutive win with a 5-2 victory over Idaho State Sunday at the Louisiana Pacific Tennis Center. The Pilots improve to 6-2 on the season, while the Bengals drop to 6-4 overall.
The five-match win streak equals the 2019 Pilots early season run for the longest since the 2015 team won seven consecutive contests. Portland's 6-2 record also ties the best eight-match start in program history with the teams from 1997, 1999 and 2019. The Pilots can secure the best single-season start ever with one more win.
It began on Sunday with a dominant doubles display. Iva Zelic and Sally Pethybridge won 6-4 at No. 1 followed by freshmen Alaia Rubio Perez and Meagan Pearson with a 6-3 win at No. 3. Rimona Rouf and Aleksandra Dimitrijevic were up 5-3 at No. 2 when the match was stopped.
Portland then quickly clinched with straight set wins at the top three singles positions. Pethybridge cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Lola O'Lideadha at No. 2 followed by Zelic with a 6-1, 6-3 win against Hana Cho at the top of the lineup. Rouf then clinched with a 6-2, 6-3 win against Megan Lang-Gould at No. 3.
Rubio Perez finished the Portland scoring with a 6-0, 3-6, 10-8 win at No. 5.
