PORTLAND, Ore. -- Peter Allegro collected six strikeouts and Nick Brink added five more to help propel the Portland Pilots over the Niagara Purple Eagles 12-1 on Sunday. The win clinched the series for the Pilots, their third series win on the year.
In addition to his six strikeouts, Allegro (1-2) went six innings, giving up one run on four hits and walking none for Portland (10-5). Brink's five strikeouts came in addition to his three shutout innings of work where he allowed just one hit without surrendering a walk.
Evan Scavotto led the way offensively for the Pilots, going 2-for-2 in the ballgame with two doubles, a walk and three RBI's. Zach Toglia provided a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI's. Briley Knight also helped out, going 2-for-4 for Portland with a double and two RBI's.
How it Happened
The Pilots got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the bottom the first inning with the game still scoreless. Portland got an RBI single from Toglia, scoring Jake Holcroft from second base.
The Purple Eagles failed to push any runs across before the Pilots offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. Portland scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-run single off the bat of Jake Tsukada and an RBI double from Knight, which brought the score to 4-0 in favor of the Pilots.
Niagara narrowed Portland's lead to 4-1 before the Pilots stretched the advantage to 6-1 in the third inning. The Pilots got run-scoring doubles from Scavotto and sophomore Spencer Scott to pick up two runs.
Portland held the Purple Eagles scoreless before building on their lead in the fifth inning. The Pilots scored five runs in the inning, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Scavotto, a two-run double from Nich Klemp and a since, bringing the Portland advantage to 11-1.
The Pilots kept Niagara off the scoreboard before building on their lead to 12-1 in the eighth inning. Portland picked up a run on Toglia's leadoff home run off of Niagara's Brady Kobitowich. The score remained 12-1 for the rest of the game, as the Pilots coasted to the win.
