LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Portland Pilots drilled a program and tournament record 19 three-pointers en route to a 92-74 win against San Diego Thursday night in the first round of the 2023 University Credit Union West Coast Conference Basketball Tournament hosted at the Orleans Arena. The Pilots advance to face the tournament No. 5 seed, BYU, on Friday at 6 p.m.
The Pilots (14-18) scored 57 second half points to pull away after the game was tied at 35 at the half. Portland made 19-of-36 three-pointers and made just seven two-point field goals in the contest. The team had 19 assists and also made 21-of-27 free throws.
Tyler Robertson led the way with 23 points, 11 rebounds and six rebounds including 6-fo-8 from the field and 5-of-6 from three-point range. Moses Wood added 19 points and five rebounds. Kristian Sjolund and Mike Meadows added 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Juanse Gorosito had 15 points and drilled five three-pointers to break the Portland single-season freshman three-point record. He now has 62 and moved passed Jared Stohl (58, 2007-08).
Portland raced out to a 15-7 lead courtesy of five early three-pointers. The Pilots wouldn't convert a two-point field goal until Robertson's jumper gave the team a 31-30 lead with 3:30 left in the period.
Back-to-back threes from Gorosito and Meadows made it 45-41 early in the second half. Two Wood free throws and another triple from Gorosito pushed the margin to 59-48 and Portland's lead would grow to as much as 19 late in regulation.
Marcellus Earlington and Eric Williams Jr. had 15 points each to lead the Toreros.
