SAN DIEGO, CALIF. -- The Portland Pilots brought a 6-4 lead into the ninth inning, but could not hold on and fell 7-6 to the San Diego Toreros Sunday.
Sophomore Jacob Dobmeier (2-1) took the loss on the mound for Portland (19-16, 9-6). Sophomore Jack Folkins was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going two shutout innings without allowing a hit, walking two and striking out one.
At the plate, the Pilots were led by sophomore Zach Toglia, who went 1-for-5 on the day with a home run and three RBI. Junior Evan Scavotto furnished a noteworthy day at the dish as well, going 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI. Junior Ben Patacsil also helped out for Portland, putting together four hits in five trips to the plate while adding two doubles.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Pilots got the scoring started early, putting three runs on the board in the top of the first inning. Portland scored three times, all of them coming across on a three-run homer off the bat of Toglia.
The Pilots then lost some of their lead, expanding on their advantage in the fifth inning after the Toreros cut it to 3-2. Portland scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Scavotto, which brought the Pilots lead to 4-2.
Portland held San Diego scoreless before building their lead to 5-2 the following inning. The Pilots added a run on junior Tristan Gomes' two-out solo home run off sophomore Jack Bunnell.
Portland held the Toreros without a run before their offense got things moving the next inning. The Pilots scored a run on Scavotto's one-out solo home run off junior Ivran Romero, bringing the Portland advantage to 6-2. The Pilots were unable to hold the lead, as San Diego scored five times over the remaining two innings to grab the 7-6 win.
GAME NOTES
- Patacsil put together a four-hit day for the Pilots.
- Portland's power output was led by Patacsil, who had two extra base hits in the ballgame.
- Four Portland hitters had multiple base knocks in the ballgame.
- The Pilots took San Diego pitchers deep three times.
- The Pilots out-hit the Toreros at a 13-11 clip.
- Portland pitchers faced 41 San Diego hitters in the game, allowing seven ground balls and 12 fly balls while striking out four.
- San Diego was led offensively by sophomore Justin Decriscio, who went 3-for-5 with a home run and an RBI.
- Senior Ryan Robinson led the Toreros pitching staff, throwing one scoreless inning.
- Portland's 10 home runs are tied for the most they've had in a series this season, when they hit 10 across four games against Utah Tech. It's the most home runs they've hit in a three-game series this season
- The Pilots three home runs on the day, which marked the third time this series they hit three or more home runs in a game. They had 10 for the series.
- Scavotto, Toglia and Gomes all homered on the day, with Gomes and Scavotto hitting their fifth homers of the season and Toglia his fourth.
- Patacsil's team-high three hits marks the second time this season he's posted at least three knocks in a game.
- Nich Klemp had five extra-base hits throughout the series, adding another today with a double.
