SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- The San Francisco Dons were too much for Portland on the day, as the Pilots lost 4-2 on Saturday.
Junior Brock Gillis (3-4) started and took the loss on the mound for Portland (29-21). The right-hander went four innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on two hits, allowing two walks and striking out four.
Junior Christian Cooney led the way offensively for the Pilots, going 2-for-5 in the ballgame with a home run and an RBI. Sophomore Zach Toglia put together a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Pilots got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Portland scored twice in the inning, including one on a solo shot from Cooney. The Pilots were unable to hold the lead, as San Francisco scored four times over the remaining eight innings to grab the 4-2 win.
GAME NOTES
- Portland's highest scoring inning was the first, when it pushed two runs across.
- Portland pitchers limited San Francisco to just 1-for-9 (.111) with runners in scoring position.
- Portland pitchers faced 37 San Francisco hitters in the game, allowing eight ground balls and four fly balls while striking out 11.
- The Pilots drew four walks from San Francisco pitching.
- Cooney led the Pilots at the plate, going 2-for-5 with a home run and an RBI.
- San Francisco was led offensively by senior Tyler Martinez, who went 2-for-5 with two home runs and two RBI.
- Senior Jesse Barron led the Dons pitching staff, throwing 6.2 innings of two-run ball.
