PORTLAND, Ore. – For the second time this year, Portland Pilots Men's Soccer defender Kevin Bonilla earned plenty of national attention, making the TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week and the College Soccer News Team of the Week.
Bonilla earned the honors after another fantastic performance this past weekend for Portland. The outside back notched two assists in Portland's 4-2 win over the No. 14 Denver Pioneers, their first win over a ranked opponent this season. The game marked the third time this year that Bonilla recorded multiple assists in a match, moving him to seven on the year. That total ranks second in the nation and first in the WCC.
Along with the No. 2 ranking nationally in assists, Bonilla currently leads the nation in assists per game, averaging 1.40 assists per contest at the moment. The next closest WCC player is 0.8 assists per contest lower than Bonilla. The Texan's seven assists are also the most of any Pilot through five games since at least the 2000s.
Portland ranks fifth in the nation now with the latest United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll coming out this afternoon. The Pilots are 4-1 on the year and currently lead the WCC in 13 different categories. Nationally, they are third in total points (55) and scoring offense (3.40), fourth in assists (21), fifth in goal differential (12), sixth in total goals (17) and 15
th in WLT percentage (.800).
The Pilots are home for their next match, taking on the CSUN Matadors this Thursday at 7 p.m. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stats and video options.
