SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – For the second time this season, Jacob Babalai was named the WCC Offensive Player of the Week.
Babalai earned the honor after a high-scoring week that saw him score three goals across two matches. Babalai put together a brace against the CSUN Matadors in a 4-0 victory and then scored Portland's lone goal against the No. 20 Washington Huskies. His match against CSUN marked the second time he's scored multiple goals in a match this year.
Babalai has shined to start the season, already scoring 16 points off seven goals and two assists. His goal total is just one shy of his season high and he is also the first Pilot since 2013 to post at least seven goals through seven games. Babalai ranks among the best both in the conference and nationally, ranking first in the WCC in goals (7), points (16) and points per game (2.29) and ranking second, fifth and fourth nationally in those respective categories.
The Pilots are 5-2 this season and currently lead the WCC in nine different statistical categories, including total points (67), points per game (9.57), assists per game (3.29), total goals (22), goal differential (14) and total assists (23). Nationally, they are third in total points, points per game and assists per game, fifth in total goals, sixth in goal differential and ninth in assists. Their 22 goals are the most through seven games since 1999.
Portland opens conference play this weekend at Merlo Field, hosting the Pacific Tigers on Saturday, Sept. 30. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stats and video coverage.
