PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland men's basketball team led a majority of the game but came up short in an 85-81 loss to the San Diego Toreros Tuesday at the Chiles Center.
The Pilots (7-13, 1-4 WCC) had four players score in double figures, led by Tyler Robertson, who had 17 points, four assists and two steals. Yuto Yamanouchi-Williams tacked on 15 points and Chris Austin chipped in as well with 14 points off of the bench.
Portland racked up 15 assists on 29 made field goals and shot 52 percent from the field, but the Toreros (11-10, 2-5) shot 53 percent overall and knocked down 12-of-25 three-pointers.
PJ Hayes erupted for a career-high 33 points, including 9-of-14 three-pointers, to lead San Diego.
How It Happened
After playing to a 12-12 tie, Portland went on a 14-0 run with 13:08 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Vukasin Masic, to take a 26-12 lead. San Diego picked up the defensive pressure and rode 19 first half points from Hayes to come back for a 40-38 lead at the half.
Portland narrowed its deficit to 42-41 before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Austin's three, to seize a 48-42 lead with 15:59 to go in the contest. The Pilots maintained their lead until Wayne McKinney III hit a three-pointer to tie it at 62 with 7:21 remaining.
Lungu gave USD a 70-67 lead with a three and the Pilots tied the game on four occasions late but couldn't get over the hump.
Robertson fouled out with 3:47 remaining and the Toreros held on down the stretch.
