EUGENE, Ore. – Portland led by double digits late in regulation before the Oregon Ducks sent the game to overtime with a late basket and took control in the extra period for an 80-70 win Tuesday night at Matthew Knight Arena.
Vukasin Masic and Vincent Delano scored 12 points each to lead the Pilots, while freshman Todd Jones recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Graduate guard Chris Austin finished with 11 points and moved past the 1,000-point mark for his career as he came into the game needing 10 to reach the milestone.
Consecutive runners in the lane by Austin and Masic gave Portland its largest lead of the game at 54-41 with 8:11 remaining. The Ducks cut the margin down to seven before Masic beat the shot clock with a top of the key three-pointer to make it 57-47 with 5:29 to go.
Delano buried a left wing three-pointer to make it 60-49, but the Ducks answered with eight straight points before Ballew drilled another three to go back up 63-57. Austin made a strong move to the hoop and finished for a 65-59 lead with 1:52 on the clock.
Austin made a pair of free throws for a 67-62 lead with 36 seconds remaining, but Barthelemy drilled his third three of the period to pull within two and 29.9 left on the clock.
Portland missed two free throws and got a defensive stop on a missed Oregon jumper, but turned the ball over in the backcourt and Jadrian Tracey made a layup to tie the game at 67-67 with nine seconds remaining. Delano went coast-to-coast but his contested runner missed and the game went to overtime.
The Ducks controlled overtime from the start scoring the first seven points and never looked back.
Portland's stifling defense limited the Ducks to 27 percent shooting and forced seven turnovers in jumping out to an early first half lead. Delano and Ballew provided sparks off the bench with five points apiece, while Austin Rapp and Jones had six points and five rebounds apiece as the Pilots raced to a 31-23 at the half.
The Ducks cut the margin down to one possession early in the second half, but Pilot junior big man Jermaine Ballisager Webb hit back-to-back three-pointers and then found Delano for a backdoor layup to put the Pilots back up 46-37.
Portland shot 38 percent overall, while the Ducks finished at 41 percent from the field.
Rapp stuffed the stat sheet for Portland with nine points, nine rebounds, five assists and two blocked shots in 42 minutes of court time.
The Pilots regularly had four freshmen on the court throughout the game in Rapp, Jones, Delano and Ballew.
Portland continues its early season road trip on Saturday at Long Beach State. The Pilots and the Beach are set for a 2 p.m. tip-off on ESPN+ and 910 ESPN Portland (KMTT).
