How It Happened
The Pilots fell behind early but soon asserted themselves to take a 9-6 lead halfway through the first. The Pilots then added two points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 16-11 advantage.
Portland built that first quarter lead to 24-17 before going on a 7-0 run starting at the 5:41 mark in the second period to increase the lead to 31-17. The Waves cut into that lead, but the Pilots still enjoyed a 35-24 advantage heading into halftime. Portland forced seven Pepperdine turnovers in the period and turned them into eight points.
Following intermission, Portland continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 44-29 before going on a 7-0 run to expand the lead further to 51-29 with 5:24 to go in the third. The Pilots held onto that lead for the rest of the frame and entered the fourth quarter with a 58-36 edge. Portland played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 23 points in the paint.
Portland started tacking on points in the fourth almost immediately, going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Mogel's jumper, to grow the lead to 64-36 with 8:42 to go in the contest. The Pilots kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 78-46 win.
