IRVINE, Calif. -- The Portland Pilots made a late push with five runs scored in the seventh and eighth innings, but ultimately fell 6-5 to the USC Trojans. The loss evens the series heading into the finale.
Carter Gaston (1-1) came out of the bullpen for Portland (3-2) and took the loss. The one run he allowed proved to be the game-winner. Sam Stuhr started for Portland, going 4.2 innings with five runs allowed and five strikeouts.
Brady Bean had three hits on the day, including a home run, a walk and an RBI to lead the Pilots. Jake Holcroft and Christian Cooney each went 1-for-5 with an RBI while Justin Ramirez was 1-for-4 with an RBI.
How it Happened
The Trojans scored five runs in five innings to take a sizeable lead on Portland. But the Pilots responded in a big way, finally putting runs on the board in the seventh inning. Cooney, Holcroft and Ramirez all had RBI hits while Tyler Howard drove in another run on a groundout to make it just 5-4 USC.
The Pilots kept the Trojans off the board before tying it up in the eighth. Portland picked up a run on Bean's leadoff home run off of Josh Blum, which brought the score level at 5-5. USC, however, scored in the bottom of the ninth off an RBI double to break the tie and grab the 6-5 win.
