OREM, Utah -- After trailing by as many as five in their series finale, the Portland Pilots rallied to earn an 8-6 win in extra innings against the Utah Valley Wolverines. The victory gave the Pilots their first weekend sweep of the season.
Carter Gaston (2-1) got the win out of the bullpen for Portland (6-3). The right-hander went four innings, giving up one run on two hits, allowing no walks and striking out five. Sam Stuhr started for the Pilots, going six innings with five runs and nine hits allowed and nine strikeouts.
The Pilots had another stellar day at the plate, amassing eight runs on 14 hits and with six players earning multiple hits on the day. Spencer Scott shined, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI's. Zach Toglia also went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, Jake Holcroft, Tyler Howard and Tristan Gomes each went 2-for-5 and Brady Bean went 2-for-6 in the leadoff spot. Jonas Salk hit his second home run of the season and drove in two batters.
How it Happened
Utah Valley rushed out to a 5-0 lead in the first two innings, with the Pilots first putting runs on the board in the sixth inning. Portland's offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a two-run home run off the bat of Salk and a two-run double from Scott. After that, they only trailed by one to the Wolverines.
The Pilots kept the Wolverines off the board before tying it up in the seventh. Portland pushed across a run on Toglia's one-out RBI double, which evened the score at 5-5. That 5-5 tie turned into a 6-5 Portland lead in the ninth when an RBI single off the bat of Gomes gave them the lead.
The Wolverines tied the ballgame at six with a solo homer in the ninth to take it into extra innings. Portland quickly regained their advantage in the 10th inning. The Pilots recorded two runs off of Utah Valley pitching, scoring off RBI hits from Bean and Holcroft to make it 8-6 Pilots. Portland recorded three quick outs to complete the sweep.
