BOSTON, Mass. – Laura Pellicoro and Matt Strangio will compete this weekend at the 2024 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships scheduled for March 8-9 at The Track at New Balance in Boston, Mass. The event will be covered live on ESPN+.
Pellicoro will compete first in Friday's Indoor Mile Prelims at 4 p.m. (PT) in the second of two heats. The top four from each heat plus the next two best times will advance to Saturday's finals scheduled for 4 p.m.
Strangio will represent the Pilots in the men's 3,000-meter run which will begin on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Both runners shattered the school records in their respective events. Pellicoro's mile time of 4:31.39 at the Husky Classic broke her own record by 1.52 seconds, set a season ago. She was No. 19 on the national list this year and is one of the 16 qualifiers for nationals in the event.
Pellicoro also owns the school records in three other races this season, including the 600-meter run (1:31.56), the 800-meter (2:05.01), the 1,000-meter (2:42.51) and the 3,000-meter (9:00.46).
Strangio posted a time of 7:39.02 at the Husky Invite which beat the previous 3,000-meter record set by Woody Kincaid in 2016 by almost 10 seconds. His time was the seventh fastest in the nation this year.
Strangio also owns the UP indoor records in the mile (3:55.53) and 5,000-meter (13:31.92).
Portland has now had 15 NCAA Indoor qualifiers dating back to 1995 season. Pellicoro was the last Pilot to qualify for the indoor nationals in 2022 (Indoor Mile).
