SPOKANE, Wash. -- Nick Brink had everything working on Friday, fanning eight Gonzaga hitters over seven innings of work, but it was not enough as the Portland Pilots fell to the Bulldogs 2-1.
In addition to his eight strikeouts, Brink (6-3) threw seven innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on six hits and walking none for Portland (22-13, 8-2). The Pilots scored just one run on eight hits, with Christian Cooney and Evan Scavotto being the only two batters to record multiple hits on the day. Cooney went 2-for-5 while stealing three bases, and Scavotto went 2-for-4.
How it Happened
The Pilots were trailing 1-0 early after the Zags scored in the first inning off a single. The Pilots finally responded in the fifth inning. Portland got an RBI single from Ben Patacsil, scoring Brady Bean from second base to tie it up at one.
Brink and the Pilots were stellar defensively, at one point retiring 12 batters in a row. But the go-ahead run for the Zags came in the bottom of the sixth off a fielder's choice, forcing Portland to score to keep it alive. Unfortunately for Portland, they did not score the rest of the way, losing 2-1.
