CORVALLIS, Ore. -- The Portland Pilots pushed the No. 5 Oregon State Beavers late, but allowed three runs in the seventh inning to ultimately fall 11-8 to the Beavers. Oregon State officially takes the season series.
Jack Folkins (1-1) came out of the bullpen for Portland (20-10) and took the loss. Kaden Segel was the starter for the Pilots, allowing eight runs and 10 hits in 4.1 innings of work. Tanner Douglas threw a shutout-inning for the Pilots out of the bullpen as well.
Scavotto's two doubles were the highlight of a 2-for-5 day. Christian Cooney put together a standout day at the dish as well, going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Jonas Salk also helped out for the Pilots, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding two RBI's.
How it Happened
The Pilots got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Portland got an RBI single from Ben Patacsil, scoring Jake Holcroft from second base.
The Beavers then rallied to score two runs and take a 2-1 lead before the Pilots got back on the board in the third. Portland picked up two runs when a single from Salk scored Spencer Scott and Scavotto, which brought the score to 3-2 in favor of the Pilots.
Portland's lead had evaporated by the time the fifth inning came around and turned into a 7-3 Oregon State advantage. The Pilots, however, cut heavily into that lead with three runs in the fifth that made it just 7-6 OSU. Cooney and Brady Bean each had RBI singles in the inning.
The Beavers expanded their lead to 8-6 before the Portland offense got back in gear, evening it up in the seventh. Salk and Cooney each scored a run for the Pilots in the inning, evening the score at 8-8. Oregon State, however, scored three runs in the seventh to put the score at its 11-8 final.
