PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Pilots Men's Soccer begins their journey for the Pacific Northwest Cup on Saturday, starting the path with a match against the Seattle U Redhawks on Saturday, April 13 at 6 p.m.
The Pacific Northwest Cup features four teams from across the Pacific Northwest, including the Pilots, the Redhawks, the Oregon State Beavers and the Washington Huskies. Over the next three weekends, the four teams will compete in a round-robin competition, with a table to track results. Following the match, they'll play the Beavers on Saturday, April 20 at Merlo Field at 6 p.m. and the Huskies on Saturday, April 27 at 6 p.m., also at Merlo Field.
"We are excited to start the PNW cup tourney this weekend at Seattle U.," Portland head coach Nick Carlin-Voigt said. "Year after year this region in the Pacific Northwest has some of the best college teams in the country full of perennial NCAA Tournament teams making deep runs in the postseason. This part of the county has a deep commitment to soccer and that is evident in the college game today. Our group is excited to test ourselves against the NCAA D1 portion of our spring schedule as we prepare for an exciting fall."
The Pilots are coming off a historic year that saw them rank as high as third in the nation as they went 12-5 overall to qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the third season in a row and the fifth time in seven fall seasons. They earned a first-round bye for the first time since 1988 after earning the 11-seed in the tournament. They set a program record with a home unbeaten streak that extended to 28 games (26-0-2) dating back to the 2021 season. The Pilots had three players taken in the 2024 MLS SuperDraft, the most in program history, with Kevin Bonilla, Jacob Babalai and Buba Fofanah all being selected.
