LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The Portland Pilots fell in the 2024 WCC Tournament Championship 8-6 to the San Diego Toreros. It's the second year in a row the Pilots have fallen in the championship.
Sam Stuhr took the loss for Portland (37-19, 19-5). Stuhr went 3.1 innings today with four runs allowed on three hits, four walks and one strikeout.
At the plate, Jake Holcroft led the way with a 2-for-5 effort that included three RBI's and a double. His three RBI's means he's posted the most by any Pilot in a single season since 1988. Tyler Howard also shined, going 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI. Ben Patacsil was also 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Holcroft also won WCC Tournament Most Outstanding Player, becoming the first Pilot to ever win the award. Holcroft led the tournament in total hits (nine), runs scored (six), total bases (16) and RBI's (16). Brady Bean and Spencer Scott also each made the WCC All-Tournament Team for the first time in their careers.
How it Happened
The Pilots got on the board first with an RBI double from Christian Cooney. His double gave Patacsil enough time to get home and make it 1-0 Portland early.
The fourth inning saw the Toreros take the lead, with USD scoring five runs. Portland responded in the fifth when Howard and Holcroft's RBI doubles brought in a total of three runs to cut the deficit to one.
USD built on their lead with a run in the seventh before the Pilots cut back into that lead in the eighth. Patacsil's RBI single brought in a run to make it 6-5 USD. The Toreros managed to get some insurance in the ninth with two runs, making it 8-5 USD.
The Pilots had one last push in them. They scored a run off a single from Holcroft to cut the lead to two, but it was too little too late. The Toreros won 8-6.
