PORTLAND, Ore. -- Portland Pilots Men's Soccer has added Ethan Zamora for the Fall 2024 season. Zamora joins as a sophomore with three years of eligibility remaining.
"Ethan had a good freshman year for SDSU playing in the Pac-12 and will compete for minutes at both outside back spots," Portland head coach Nick Carlin-Voigt said. "Having lost three of the best fullbacks on the West Coast in Kevin Bonilla, Nick Denley and Julian Conze to graduation, we needed to add more defenders. Ethan really wanted to be here, and that is always exciting in the recruiting process. Kevin, Nick and Julian were massive weapons in the way we played, driving our success against nationally respected teams. Ethan is a hard-working and committed player who is a very capable defender and someone we think will add to the competitiveness of our roster and program. Once he gets into our culture and learns how we like to play, we think the best is ahead in his final three years here on The Bluff. Welcome to Soccer City USA, Ethan!"
Zamora, a defender, played in all 17 matches for the San Diego State Aztecs in 2023 with four starts. He was the only true freshman to play for the Aztecs. Zamora logged 724 minutes for the Aztecs and notched one goal, scoring against Life Pacific. Zamora also has experience with the Real Monarchs in MLS Next Pro and earned an amateur contract with the San Diego Loyal. Zamora was named to the MLS NEXT Best of the Best during his time with the Monarchs as well.
The Pilots are coming off a historic year that saw them rank as high as third in the nation as they went 12-5 overall to qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the third season in a row and the fifth time in seven fall seasons. They earned a first-round bye for the first time since 1988 after earning the 11-seed in the tournament and have made it to the second round each of the last three years, being one of just 11 teams in the nation to do so.
Portland has been one of the most exciting programs in the country, leading the nation in combined goals per game over the last two years (2.52). They set a program record with a home unbeaten streak that extended to 28 games (26-0-2) dating back to the 2021 season. The Pilots had three players taken in the 2024 MLS SuperDraft, the most in program history, with Kevin Bonilla, Jacob Babalai and Buba Fofanah all being selected. Portland is 10
th in the country in NCAA Director Cup points from NCAA Participation the last three years.
