CORVALLIS, Ore. -- The Portland Pilots lit it up from outside, making 14 three-pointers on 60.9% shooting to defeat the Oregon State Beavers 86-61 at Gill Coliseum. It's the Pilots' first win over the Beavers since the 2002-03 season.
The Pilots (17-3, 6-3) had four players score in double figures, led by Maisie Burnham, who had a season-high 26 points, six rebounds and five assists. Emme Shearer tacked on 22 points, seven rebounds, six assists and two steals and Rhyan Mogel and Lainey Spear chipped in as well with 13 and 12 points respectively off the bench.
Portland grabbed 40 rebounds in Saturday's game compared to Oregon State's 34, led by seven boards from Trista Hull. The Pilots also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 13 rebounds into 14 second chance points.
The Portland defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Saturday's game, forcing 13 Oregon State turnovers with eight steals. Those takeaways turned into 21 points on the offensive end of the floor. Shearer's two steals led the way individually for the Pilots.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 17-16 advantage, Portland went on a 6-0 run with 1:04 left in the first quarter to increase their lead to 23-16, a score that would hold for the rest of the period. Maisie Burnham scored 12 points in the quarter to help get Portland the lead.
Portland stretched that lead to 12 points before going on a 10-0 run with just under five minutes to go in the half to make it 45-23 Pilots. The Beavers cut into that lead, but the Pilots still enjoyed a 47-31 advantage heading into halftime.
Following intermission, Portland continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 57-39 before going on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a three from Emme Shearer, to expand its lead further to 65-39 with 3:51 to go in the third. The Pilot entered the fourth quarter with a 71-50 edge. The Pilots coasted to the win from there, outscoring the Beavers 15-11 in the fourth quarter to grab the 86-61 win.
Game Notes
» The Pilots were incredible from long range, knocking down 14 of 23 three-point attempts. Their 14 three-pointers were a season-high.
» The Pilots held the Beavers to only 34.5% shooting from the field.
» Portland recorded 20 total assists in the game. They've done so 10 times this season.
