PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland men's tennis picked up its second win in as many days with a 5-2 decision over Idaho Sunday at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center.
A day after clipping Utah State by a 4-3 margin, the Pilots (2-0) took care of the Vandals (1-2). Similar to Saturday, Portland had to come-from-behind after dropping the doubles point to start the match.
The No. 3 doubles tandem of Lucas Kimelman and Tom Garcia won by a 6-3 margin, but Idaho came back to take the other two doubles matches to go ahead 1-0.
Maxim Groysman evened the scoring with a dominant 6-2, 6-0 win against Sebastian Medica at the top of the singles lineup. Stefan Skobelev posted a three-set win at No. 3 versus Yu-Shun Lai and then Tom Garcia cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 win against Gabriel Moroder at No. 4 singles.
Idaho pulled back a point when Chetanna Amadike outlasted Nikola Keremedchiev 7-5, 2-6, 7-5 at No. 2 singles.
Portland got the clinching point from the freshman Kimelman at the No. 5 position with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Noe De Col. Cade Fernando then concluded the scoring with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Eric William Wang at No. 6 singles.
"There have been yearlong stretches where we have only won a few matches after losing the doubles point and then we just did that twice in two days," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "We did play well in singles, but our doubles was again a struggle. Bouncing back after those rough opening moments to figure out a way to win four or five singles matches shows resilience for sure. Max was solid, Stefan bounced back nicely from a rough performance yesterday and the bottom of our lineup was very solid.
"We are going to need to make improvements and adjustments to have a chance next weekend against two very good teams up in Seattle, but that's what it's all about – making improvements and adjustments on the fly. That is what will give us a chance to be a good team when April rolls around."
Portland will next head to Seattle, Wash. for a pair of neutral site matches at the Nordstrom Tennis Center at University of Washington. The Pilots face North Florida on Friday at noon and then take on Utah Sunday at 3 p.m.
