PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Pilots Women's Basketball announced their first signing from the class of 2026 on Thursday, bringing in local point guard Sara Mangan.
"We are thrilled with what Sara will bring to this program and feel she will make an immediate impact," Portland head coach Michael Meek said. "She is a player that wants to be elite and has an elite work ethic. Her efficient shooting and range will elevate our offense and stretch defenses, and her basketball IQ and instinctive feel for the game make her tough on both ends of the floor. Sara is a perfect fit to our team culture and will continue to elevate our program."
Mangan is a local product coming from Beaverton, Ore. Mangan has starred for Southridge High School, earning first team All-Metro League honors each of the last three seasons, including Metro League Player of the Year for the 2024-25 season. She was second team All-State in 2024-25 and was named an adidas All-American in 2025 as well. Mangan played on the adidas 3SSB circuit where she shined, shooting 48% from 3-point range.
With the Skyhawks, she's led the team to Metro League championships in each of the last two seasons and a sixth-place finish at OSAA 6A State Championships in 2025. Meek was also the head coach of the Southridge Skyhawks early in his career, where he had a highly successful 10 seasons that included five state titles. He was the 2006 MaxPreps.com National Girls' Basketball Coach of the Year in 2006 with the Skyhawks as well.
The Portland Pilots are coming off a historic season that saw them finish with a 31-5 record overall and a 17-3 record in WCC play, setting program records for wins both overall and in WCC play. They won a share of the WCC regular season title, their first since 1996-97, and their fourth title in the last six seasons. They qualified for the Women's Basketball Invitation Tournament (WBIT) for the first time as a program, advancing to the quarterfinals with their first ever road wins in the postseason.
The Pilots are 2-1 to start this season, with a big road contest against the No. 8 USC Trojans up next. The two teams play at the Galen Center on Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. on Big Ten Plus. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stats and video options.
