PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots will dust off the dancing shoes after earning the 8-seed in the 2025 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship. They will play the winner of the first-round matchup between the UC Irvine Anteaters and the Denver Pioneers on Sunday, Nov. 23 at 6 p.m., hosting at Merlo Field.
It is the sixth time under head coach Nick Carlin-Voigt and the 20
th time in program history that the Pilots have made the tournament. By making the top 16, the Pilots earn an automatic bye for the first round of the NCAA Tournament, earning their second first-round bye in three seasons and their third as a program. With the top eight distinction, the Pilots will officially host up to the Round of 16 should they advance that far.
Portland has shined this season, reaching new heights as a program. They finished 13-1-3 overall and 6-1-2 in WCC, with their overall win total being the highest in the regular season since 1995 and their conference win total is the best since 2022. Their .853 winning percentage is also the highest since the 1988 season. It's the sixth 10-win season for head coach Nick Carlin-Voigt as well. Portland's 11-0-0 record at home is the best in the nation, with no other team boasting 11 wins at home with no losses or ties.
The Pilots thrived against a strong schedule both in conference and out of it, ranking eighth overall in RPI and fifth in nonconference RPI. They went 5-1-3 combined in Quad 1 and Quad 2 contests and posted three wins over top 25 RPI teams this season. The Pilots have been in the top 10 nationally for 10 straight weeks and ranked as high as first in the nation in the United Soccer Coaches Poll, their first time ever at first in the poll and their first time in first place in any poll since 1992. Portland ranks in the top 15 nationally in numerous categories, sitting at second in assists (53), third in assists per game (3.12), fourth in win-loss-tied percentage (.853) and points per game (7.82), fifth in goal differential (31), sixth in total points (133) and goals-against average (.563), eighth in goals per game (2.35) and 11
th in total goals (40).
