HONOLULU – The Portland Pilots fell in a tight contest against the Idaho State Bengals on Friday, losing their first game in the Bank of Hawai'I Classic 58-57. The loss puts Portland at 2-3 on the season.
Dyani Ananiev led the Pilots with 16 points on the day. Lainey Spear put together 11 points and nine rebounds while Nicole Anderson scored 10 points off the bench with three 3-pointers. Ananiev's 16 points are a season high as well as Anderson's 10 points. Portland had 13 assists and knocked down nine 3-pointers.
Portland recorded double-digit steals with 10 on the afternoon. Rhyan Mogel and Tiffany Barbosa posted three steals each to lead the Pilots while Ananiev added two. They held the Bengals to just 32.8% shooting on the day and forced 20 turnovers.
How it Happened
The Pilots struggled offensively in the first quarter, putting up just five points to the Bengals' 15. Portland bounced back in the second quarter, cutting the deficit to single digits. Dyani Ananiev led the Pilots with eight points in the half, but Portland still trailed 29-24 entering the break.
Portland came out strong in the second half, putting together a 14-2 run to start the third and blaze out to a nine-point lead. Rhyan Mogel led the way with six of Portland's 20 points. Idaho State put together a 7-0 run towards the end of the quarter to cut into the lead, but the Pilots still led by three.
The final quarter was a neck-and-neck battle, with both teams trading runs to see who can come out on top. The Pilots got a late 3-pointer from Lainey Spear with 51 seconds to go, giving Portland a 57-56 lead. But the Bengals responded with a late layup with 13 seconds to go. Portland missed their final shot and came up short, losing 58-57.
