EUGENE, Ore. – Portland freshman point guard Joel Foxwell scored 21 points but the Oregon Ducks pulled away late for a 94-69 victory Wednesday night at Matthew Knight Arena.
The Pilots (7-5) had three players score in double figures, led by Foxwell, who also dished out eight assists. Mikah Ballew added 10 points and Timo George helped out with 10 points off of the bench.
Cameron Williams corralled a team high 11 rebounds before fouling out.
Portland forced 15 Oregon turnovers and turned those takeaways into 15 points on the other end of the floor.
Perimeter shooting and free throws proved to be the difference as Oregon drilled 13 three-pointers to Portland's five and went 19-for-23 at the foul line, while the Pilots were 11-of-14.
Kwame Evans Jr. led five Ducks (6-5) in double figures with 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
How It Happened
Foxwell was dominant early scoring 13 points with five assists in the first half. He scored or assisted on six consecutive possessions capped by a wing three-pointer to tie the game at 15-15. Oregon was able to create some separation and a three at the halftime buzzer from Jackson Shelstad made it 51-41 at the break.
The Pilots opened the second half with a three-pointer from Mikah Ballew to pull within 51-44, but Oregon raced out to a 76-55 advantage before Portland went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Jermaine Ballisager Webb's layup, to shrink the deficit to 76-60 with 9:01 to go in the contest. Oregon responded and outscored the Pilots the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 94-69.
