RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- The Portland Pilots got a boost from Brady Bean, who strung together three hits and three RBI's in an 11-7 loss to the California Baptist Lancers Saturday.
Kaden Segel (0-1) took the loss on the mound for Portland (0-2). Junior Curtis Hebert started the ballgame and went four innings, surrendering one run on four hits, walking one and striking out six. Hebert's six strikeouts are a career high.
Freshman Cole Katayama-Stall put together a noteworthy performance in his Pilots debut, going 1-for-3 with a home run and an RBI. Tyler Howard and Jonas Salk also each went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
How it Happened
The Pilots got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Katayama-Stall put Portland on the board with a leadoff home run off sophomore Andrew Rudd.
After the Lancers rallied to tie the ballgame at one, the Pilots came back to retake the lead in the fifth inning. Portland plated two runs off the Lancers, with Tyler Howard's double and Riley McCarthy's sacrifice fly making it 3-1 Portland.
CBU took back control to score five unanswered runs, making it 8-3 Lancers. The Pilots picked up three runs in the eighth, two of them coming across on a two-run single off the bat of Bean and the other off a Jonas Salk RBI single. The Pilots trailed 8-6 deep in the ballgame.
The Lancers expanded their lead to 11-6 in the top of the eighth before the Portland offense got back in action. The Pilots scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Bean, but ultimately came up short.
