GILBERT, Ariz. –The Portland men's tennis team moved into the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings for the first time since 2017 coming in at No. 72 this week. The Pilots are 3-3 on the season with a win against current No. 65-ranked Utah State.
The only Pilot losses have come against No. 47 Washington, No. 55 Utah and New Mexico, who is just outside the Top 75.
Portland will look to remain in the rankings at season's end for the first time since 2017 when the team finished No. 48, the best in program history.
The Pilots are one of five West Coast Conference teams in this week's rankings. They are joined by No. 7 San Diego, No. 21 Pepperdine, No. 60 Santa Clara and No. 74 LMU.
"It's nice to be back in the rankings," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "We had a nice win against Utah State, which really helped us. The WCC is very well-represented at the top of the rankings with San Diego and Pepperdine having great starts, but it is also nice to see Santa Clara and LMU recognized. Our next one is a pretty big challenge against No. 36 UC Irvine. We will enjoy being noticed for a pretty good start to the season, but know there is a lot of work still to be done."
The Pilots visit No. 36 UC Irvine on Saturday, March 1 at 1 p.m. and then will take on Temple in a neutral site match in Irvine, Calif. on March 2.
