PORTLAND, Ore. – It was a stellar year for University of Portland Athletics in the classroom, with the department as a whole posting a GPA above 3.50 the entire year. This is the first time Portland Athletics has ever accomplished such a feat.
"This year our more than 300 student-athletes accomplished something that has never been done in the history of Portland Athletics, earning above a 3.50 GPA," Senior Associate Athletic Director of Academic / Student-Athlete Development Glenna Andrews said. "I am exceptionally proud of this accomplishment as it shows the high level of academic commitment embedded within this department and each program. It also exemplifies the work and level of dedication seen from our student-athletes in the classroom. This success is something to be celebrated and is an achievement the entire University can take pride in as it was a collective effort from staff, coaches, faculty, and of course, our student-athletes."
UP athletics programs posted a combined GPA of 3.52 in the 2024-25 academic year, with a 3.51 GPA in the Fall and a 3.53 in the Spring. Both GPAs for those respective semesters would've been the highest at the time in department history. In the fall, 57.9% of student-athletes made the dean's list of their respective schools, almost 85% earned a 3.0 or better and 47 student-athletes finished the fall with a 4.0 GPA.
This spring, 50 student-athletes posted a perfect 4.0 GPA, the most ever as a department. Along with this, a record 88% of student-athletes finished with a 3.0 or better and 50% of student-athletes made their respective Dean's List. 68 student-athletes graduated this spring, including the Class of 2025 valedictorian in UP cross country and track runner Tommy Paltzer.
Several teams put together their best years ever, with baseball, men's basketball and men's cross country all posting their highest GPAs ever as programs. Across the board, 20 Pilots earned WCC All-Academic First Team honors, six earned MPSF All-Academic honors and 11 earned College Sports Communicators Academic All-District honors.
Portland Athletics excelled in the latest NCAA Academic Progress Rates report, released earlier this month. Eleven programs either maintained or increased their multiyear APR score from last year's publicly released data, with both tennis programs posting perfect single-year scores for the 2023-24 season. Portland posted a 94% Graduation Success Rate, marking the 13th consecutive year that they've posted a GSR above 90%.
