PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Pilots Men's Soccer adds another stellar player from Division II ahead of the 2025 season, signing All-American defender Andrew Portis from Cal State Los Angeles.
"We are excited to welcome Andrew to The Bluff and Soccer City USA," Portland head coach Nick Carlin-Voigt said. "Andrew is a robust, athletic center back. It was good he spent the spring with us learning how we train, play and compete. We needed to add another center back after USA Youth National defender Christian Diaz signed a pro deal with LAFC, and we liked Andrew's national championship-winning experience at the Division II level."
A graduate transfer, Portis joined Cal State LA in the 2020-21 academic year and played three seasons total for the Golden Eagles from 2022-24, appearing in 62 games with 60 starts for the Division II powerhouse. During his time in Los Angeles, the Golden Eagles advanced to at least to the second round of the NCAA Tournament each year – including a national championship victory in 2021 – and won the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament championship three times (2021-23). This past season, the Golden Eagles went 12-3-6 and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
Portis scored seven goals and added five assists over his three seasons of play, including four goals this past year, all game-winners. He earned numerous honors during his time with the Golden Eagles, garnering All-California Collegiate First Team honors each of the last two seasons as well as All-CCAA Honorable Mention in 2022 and United Soccer Coaches All-West Region First Team honors in 2023 and 2024. He was the 2024 CCAA Defensive Player of the Year as well.
The Temecula native earned national recognition for his stellar play the last two years, attaining All-American status four times in two seasons. Portis was a United Soccer Coaches First Team All-American in 2023 and 2024 and was also a Division II Conference Commissioners Association First Team All-American this past year and a third team selection in 2023. He was just the third player in program history to earn All-American honors in multiple seasons and was one of just three players in Division II to make multiple All-American teams in 2024.
This past season, the Pilots finished at 7-4-7 overall and 4-0-4 in WCC play, ending the year on a 10-game unbeaten streak that was the longest on the West Coast and the third longest in the country. They earned four wins over teams that finished in the top 35 in RPI this season as well. They have achieved a top 10 ranking nationally in each of the last three seasons and led the country in goals scored between the 2022 and 2023 seasons.
The Pilots have also had 12 players move on to play in MLS since Nick Carlin-Voigt took over as head coach in 2016. Eight players have been drafted, with Paul Christensen, Rey Ortiz, Kevin Bonilla, Jacob Babalai and Buba Fofanah all being taken in the MLS SuperDraft. Efetobo Aror and Nick Fernandez were taken in the first and second round in this year's SuperDraft as well, with Fernandez signing with the San Jose Earthquakes in February. Benji Michel and Kris Reaves each signed homegrown contracts with Orlando SC and FC Dallas respectively back in 2018 while Delentz Pierre and Brandon Cambridge each signed with Real Salt Lake and Charlotte FC in 2022 and Tommy Musto signed with LAFC in 2024.
