PORTLAND, Ore. -- Portland Pilots Men's Soccer announced on Tuesday their schedule for the 2025 fall season.
"We are excited to release our 2025 schedule," Portland Head Coach Nick Carlin-Voigt said. "We are again playing a challenging nonconference schedule. We have led the WCC in at large NCAA births over the past eight falls and that's due to our players being able to execute the strength of schedule we have constructed. We have top Friday night opponents and want to earn the right to make our supporters proud. Many programs we are playing won their league or made deep NCAA runs."
The schedule sees the Pilots take on five teams that made the NCAA Tournament last season -- including West Coast Conference newcomer Seattle University -- as well as two teams that advanced to at least the third round of the NCAA tournament. The schedule also features the return of Portland's 503 deal. For select games this season, fans can purchase tickets online for $5 with free parking and a special $3 food item. Three men's soccer games this year will be 503 games this season.
"We have two challenging trips to the Midwest against Saint Louis and Wisconsin in the Big Ten as well, which are great road non-league out of region games." Carlin-Voigt said. "This is the type of schedule that our players and fans will be excited about as we continue to play top programs across the country so we are battled tested come league play. The WCC is always one of the nation's elite men's soccer conferences and I expect that to be the same this year. Our main focus will be preparing for our home opener Aug. 22 against a talented and veteran team in Central Arkansas who always are in the hunt to win their league. Get your season tickets today and support your Pilots!"
Portland will play two exhibitions at Merlo Field in mid-August, taking on the Oregon State Beavers and Washington Huskies on Aug. 11 and Aug. 15 respectively. The season officially opens on Aug. 22 for Portland against the Central Arkansas Bears. The Bears went 8-7-3 last season and 3-3-1 against ASUN opponents, battling in the ASUN Tournament Championship final before falling in penalty kicks. The Pilots and Bears played in 2022, with Portland tying the Bears 2-2 at home. The home opener will also be Bite on The Bluff, with various food carts making their way to Merlo to give fans a wide variety of food options at the game.
Portland hosts the Lewis & Clark Pioneers and the Siena Saints the following two games on Aug. 25 and Aug. 29. Siena went 7-5-6 overall and 4-1-3 in the MAAC. The matchup against the Saints will be the first 503 game of the year for men's soccer. Portland heads to Madison, Wisconsin after that to take on a strong Big Ten opponent in the Wisconsin Badgers on Sept. 1, a team that went 7-5-3 overall, including big wins over the then-No. 16 Kentucky Wildcats and the Marquette Golden Eagles. The Pilots and Badgers last played in 2019, with the Pilots earning a 1-0 win on the road.
The Pilots host an NCAA Tournament team in the Kansas City Roos on Friday Sept. 5 at Merlo Field. The Roos were 14-5-3 and 5-2-1 in the Summit League, advancing to the Third Round of the NCAA Tournament last year. The Roos beat Portland's next opponent in the opening round of that tournament, the Saint Louis Bilikens. The Billikens, who the Pilots play in Saint Louis on Sept. 12, went 8-5-8 overall and 4-1-3 in the A-10, losing in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Portland hosts yet another tournament team in the Denver Pioneers on Sept. 19 in their second 503 game of the year. The Pioneers went 15-3-5 with a 7-1 record in the Summit League, advancing to the College Cup before falling to the eventual national champion Vermont Catamounts. The Pilots played Denver to a 0-0 tie in Denver, marking their best result against a team ranked in the top three nationally since 2009. That game will be a 503 game and will also feature the Teddy Bear Toss, with fans being encourage to bring teddy bears and other stuffed animals to the game to toss on the field at halftime. All stuffed animals will be donated to Doernbecher's Children's Hospital at OHSU.
WCC play begins on Sept. 27 against the Gonzaga Bulldogs, who finished last in the WCC at 6-10-2 overall and 0-8 in WCC play. That game will be Portland's homecoming game as well family weekend at the University of Portland. The Pilots beat the Zags 2-1 last year. The Pilots will finish up the nonconference portion against the Florida International Panthers, who battled to the American Athletic Conference Tournament Championship before falling in overtime. They went 6-6-6 overall. Portland then opens October on the road against the LMU Lions on Oct. 4. The Lions finished 6-8-3 overall and 3-4-1 in the WCC. Portland's 5-0 win over the Lions last season was their largest over a Division I team in 2024.
The San Diego Toreros are next for Portland, with the Toreros coming to Portland on Oct. 10. San Diego won the WCC title for the second year in a row with a 15-3-2 record overall and 7-1 in WCC play. That one loss against conference opponents came against Portland, who beat the Toreros 3-0 on the road for the win for their first win over a top three opponent nationally since beating the No. 1 team nationally in the Indiana Hoosiers back in 2000.
The Pilots take on their in-state rival in the Oregon State Beavers right after. The Beavers, who the Pilots beat 3-2 at Merlo Field to claim the first annual Timber Cup, were an NCAA Tournament team at 10-5-3 overall and 5-2-1 in their first year of WCC play. The Pilots host the Pacific Tigers on Oct. 18, taking a team that went 4-8-4 last year and 2-5-1 in WCC play. This will be the final 503 game of the year for the Pilots. Portland closes out October in Santa Clara with a match against the Broncos, who posted a 5-8-3 overall and 2-4-2 record against WCC opponents. The Pilots tied both the Tigers and the Broncos last season.
The final two home games of the season will take place on Nov. 1 and Nov. 8, with the Pilots hosting the San Francisco Dons and the Seattle U Redhawks respectively. The Dons finished second in the WCC with at 7-6-4 and 5-1-2 in WCC play while Seattle U – who join the WCC in the 2025-26 academic year – rolled through the WAC with a 12-4-4 record overall and 7-1-1 conference record to qualify for the tournament. Portland's matchup against the Redhawks will be senior night as well. The Pilots tied the Dons last season 1-1 on the road and beat the Redhawks 3-2 the last time the two teams played in 2021. Portland closes the season out against the Saint Mary's Gaels – who finished with the fewest wins in the WCC last year at 2-9-6 and 1-4-3 in conference – on the road to finish the year.
This past season, the Pilots finished at 7-4-7 overall and 4-0-4 in WCC play, ending the year on a 10-game unbeaten streak that was the longest on the West Coast and the third longest in the country. They earned four wins over teams that finished in the top 35 in RPI this season as well. They have achieved a top 10 ranking nationally in each of the last three seasons and led the country in goals scored between the 2022 and 2023 seasons.
The Pilots have also had 12 players move on to play in MLS since Nick Carlin-Voigt took over as head coach in 2016. Eight players have been drafted, with Paul Christensen, Rey Ortiz, Kevin Bonilla, Jacob Babalai and Buba Fofanah all being taken in the MLS SuperDraft. Efetobo Aror and Nick Fernandez were taken in the first and second round in this year's SuperDraft as well, with Fernandez signing with the San Jose Earthquakes in February. Benji Michel and Kris Reaves each signed homegrown contracts with Orlando SC and FC Dallas respectively back in 2018 while Delentz Pierre and Brandon Cambridge each signed with Real Salt Lake and Charlotte FC in 2022 and Tommy Musto signed with LAFC in 2024.
