PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Pilots Men's Soccer announced on Monday the addition of freshman attacker Maddox Findlay for the 2025 season.
"Maddox is hard working fast dynamic attacker who can play anywhere on the front line or even shift to a wingback role which we saw him do with Dynamo 2," Portland Head Coach Nick Carlin-Voigt said. "It was great he graduated from high school early and joined us this spring to adapt to the college game. He has good experience with the Houston Dynamo Academy and second team and is a very driven and focused young man."
Joining as a freshman, Findlay spent this past spring with the Pilots, joining from the Houston Dynamo academy system. Listed as the 18
th best recruit out of the Rocky Mountains and Southwest region by TopDrawerSoccer as 176
th on the IMG Academy 200 list, the Henderson native played with the Houston Dynamo 2 in MLS NEXT Pro in 2024, appearing in 10 games with one start. He scored two goals on the year, with both scores coming in back-to-back games. His performance earned him Matchweek 11 MLS NEXT Pro Rising Star of Week honors. Findlay's father, Justin, ran cross country and track at the University of San Francisco.
"We think his best is ahead as he's going to need to be patient and continue to learn our system and way of playing," Carlin-Voigt said. "I like his versatility and with any young attacker it takes time for them to unlock their full potential, and we are excited above everything Maddox brings to Soccer City USA!"
This past season, the Pilots finished at 7-4-7 overall and 4-0-4 in WCC play, ending the year on a 10-game unbeaten streak that was the longest on the West Coast and the third longest in the country. They earned four wins over teams that finished in the top 35 in RPI this season as well. They have achieved a top 10 ranking nationally in each of the last three seasons and led the country in goals scored between the 2022 and 2023 seasons.
The Pilots have also had 12 players move on to play in MLS since Nick Carlin-Voigt took over as head coach in 2016. Eight players have been drafted, with Paul Christensen, Rey Ortiz, Kevin Bonilla, Jacob Babalai and Buba Fofanah all being taken in the MLS SuperDraft. Efetobo Aror and Nick Fernandez were taken in the first and second round in this year's SuperDraft as well, with Fernandez signing with the San Jose Earthquakes in February. Benji Michel and Kris Reaves each signed homegrown contracts with Orlando SC and FC Dallas respectively back in 2018 while Delentz Pierre and Brandon Cambridge each signed with Real Salt Lake and Charlotte FC in 2022 and Tommy Musto signed with LAFC in 2024.
