PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots took their third match in a row with a 4-0 drubbing of the Siena Saints at Merlo Field. The Pilots improve to 3-0-0 on the season.
Joe Highfield scored two goals in the contest, giving him four on the season. Alex Waggoner added his second goal of the season with the fourth goal being an own goal. The Pilots have outscored opponents 16-0 to start the season and have posted three shutouts in their first three games for the first time since 1989.
How it Happened
Highfield got the scoring started off a set piece in the 13th minute. Diego Rosas placed a perfect ball into the box for Highfield, with the striker rising up for the header and the goal. It was his third of the season.
Highfield struck again with a goal in the 27th minute. He once again used his head after the ball bounced in the box between Rosas and Sebastian Hernandez, with the man from Minnesota finishing it off.
The third goal for Portland came early in the second half. with Waggoner getting his second of the season. David Ajagbe pushed it forward to Ethan Zamora who curved the ball perfectly to Waggoner for the finish in the 48th minute. Ajagbe was there on the final goal for the Pilots later that minute, crossing a ball into the box that was kicked into the back of the net for an own goal. The Pilots won 4-0.
Game Notes
- Highfield has four goals on the season now while Waggoner has two. Highfield is the first Pilot to score four goals in the first three games since Benji Michel.
- Highfield now has 11 points through three games, with three assists as well.
- Rosas had his first multi-assist game of the season with two on the day.
- Miguel-Angel Hernandez posted two saves in the shutout victory.
- Portland has earned their third shutout in a row and have outscored opponents 16-0 to start the year. This is the first time they've started the season with three straight shutouts since 1989.
- Portland's 16 goals are the most they've had through the first three games of a season in program history.
- This is the second time in the last three seasons the Pilots have started 3-0.
- The Pilots are now unbeaten through their last 13 games dating back to last season.
