SAN BRUNO, Calif. – For the first time this season, Portland Pilots goalkeeper Miguel-Angel Hernandez was named the West Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week. He's the first Pilot to earn the honor this season.
Hernandez has been in goal for four of Portland's five shutouts to start the season, including the most recent two 1-0 shutout wins against the Wisconsin Badgers and Kansas City Roos. Hernandez posted crucial saves in both matches, including a save in the 79
th minute against Wisconsin and in the 84
th minute against Kansas City. The save against Kansas City came with the Pilots down a player due to a red card as well
Hernadez helped keep the Pilots undefeated through their first five games at 5-0-0. They are 5-0-0 to start the season for the first time since 1988, which was also the last season they posted five straight shutouts to start the year.
Portland has outscored opponents 18-0 to start the year for the best goal differential through five games in program history. They are one of just four teams in the nation to be 5-0-0 on the season. They currently lead the nation in goals (18), assists (21), points (57), goals-against average (0.000), shutout percentage (1.000) and save percentage (1.000).
The Pilots hit the road this week to face the No. 16 Saint Louis Bilikens. The two teams play in Saint Louis on Friday, Sept. 12 at 5 p.m. Pacific. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stats and video options.
