LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Portland Pilots battled shorthanded, but ultimately fell 77-68 to the LMU Lions in Los Angeles. The loss puts Portland at 11-9 overall and 5-3 in WCC play.
Florence Dallow posted her eighth game of double-digit scoring with 13 points to lead the way for Portland. Nicole Anderson and Rhyan Mogel were high scorers for Portland as well with 12 points each. It's the eighth time Anderson has scored in double digits and seventh for Mogel, who added seven assists. This was Anderson's first start as a Pilot as well.
Jada Kennedy, along with Anderson, made her first start as a Pilot. In her first collegiate start she scored seven points and added nine boards and two blocks. Ella Zimmerman matched her season high with eight points as well.
How it Happened
The Pilots couldn't get the ball through the net early, missing six of their first seven shots. Slowly but surely the Pilots started to put together some offense, with Nicole Anderson scoring six points off a 3-pointer and a trio of free throws to keep cutting into the lead. Portland scored six straight to end the quarter, including a buzzer-beating layup from Rhyan Mogel, to take a 16-15 lead after one.
It was an even second quarter, with Portland never gaining greater than a four-point lead throughout. The Pilots shot much better in the second quarter, hitting shots at a 53.8% clip. An and-one layup from Alison Clarke of LMU kept the Pilots' lead at just one point to end the quarter, with Portland ahead 32-31.
The third quarter followed much of the same script as the second quarter, with neither team gaining a big advantage. LMU retook the lead buoyed by a 9-2 run that gave them a four-point advantage. But the Pilots responded with a 6-0 run themselves, once again making the game a back-and-forth affair. With the Lions leading late, Dyani Ananiev hit a 3-pointer to give Portland a 51-49 lead through the first 30 minutes.
The Pilots and Lions kept it even early in the final quarter, but the Lions eventually gained control, putting together an 8-0 run by taking advantage of some costly Pilot mistakes. Maya Hernandez scored nine of her 20 points in the final quarter to put the Lions in front. LMU outscored the Pilots 28-17 in the fourth, putting LMU ahead by as much as 11 on their way to the 77-68 win.
