PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Portland women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to the Brown Bears Saturday at the Pizzitola Sports Center. Portland falls to 1-1 on the season, while the Bears improve to 1-0. The Pilots were scheduled to play at Bryant on Sunday but canceled the match due to inclement weather.

Portland started strong by taking the doubles point. The Pilots got a 6-0 win at No. 3 from Meagan Pearson and Nadine Arbaizar Martinez. Brown won at No. 1 doubles and then Dariya Radulova and Lexie Flores secured the point with a 6-4 win at the No. 2 spot.

The four-court facility had all singles start except for No. 2 and No. 5. The teams split the first wave of singles with Alaia Rubio Perez picking up a 7-6, 6-1 win at No. 1 and Maria Galatescu posting a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 4.

Brown tied the score at 3-3 with a win at No. 5 leaving the No. 2 matchup to determine the winner. Radulova battled back from a first set loss to force a third set, but Hanna Shen was able to hold on by a 6-4 margin in the deciding set.

The Pilots will next be in action on Saturday, Jan. 31 at Washington with a 3 p.m. start at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
