SUGAR LAND, Texas – Portland Pilots Baseball opened the season with a victory over the Purdue Boilermakers, surging with nine runs in the final three innings to win 9-3. The Pilots are 1-0 to start the 2026 campaign.
Portland caught fire at the plate late, with nine runs and 11 hits. Jonas Salk went 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBI's and a double to lead the way offensively for Portland. Salk was one of two Pilots to have both multiple hits and multiple RBI's on the day, with Nolan Miller going 2-for-5 with two RBI's. It's the second time he's had multiple RBI's for his career and the third time he's had multiple hits.
Brady Bean was 2-for-4 with two walks, an RBI and a double while Trey Swygart was 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI, two walks and a hit by pitch to round out the multi-hit batters. The Pilots walked 11 times on the day, marking just the ninth time since 2000 they've had that many walks in a single game.
On the mound, Kaden Segel got the start, throwing 4.1 innings with three runs and five hits allowed along with two strikeouts. Trey Newmann was stellar in relief, having no runs count against him in 3.2 innings with six strikeouts to earn the win. Logan Anderson closed things out in the final inning.
How it Happened
Purdue got the scoring started in this one, plating the first three runs of the game. The Boilermakers had an RBI double in the second and an RBI single in the third for the first two runs and scored the third run off a wild pitch from Newmann in the bottom of the fifth.
The floodgates opened in the final three innings. The Pilots scored a run on a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning and then piled on eight runs in the final two innings. In the eighth, Portland brought one run in off a walk and another on a hit by pitch, with the RBI hit coming off a single from Salk. Portland had grabbed the lead for the first time entering the bottom of the eighth 4-3.
The Pilots tacked it on from there. The ninth inning saw four RBI hits for five runs for Portland, with Salk and Cole Katayama-Stall hitting RBI doubles to bring in three runs and Bean and Miller bringing home runners off RBI singles. Anderson closed things out for Portland on the mound to secure the 9-3 win.
