How it Happened
It was an even contest early, with Santa Clara taking a quick lead with a 7-0 run after the early bucket from the Pilots. The Pilots had a 7-2 run of their own but never retook the lead from the Broncos. Ananiev hit a three with 1:43 to go and neither team scored the rest of the way to make it 15-14 after the first period.
After trading baskets early in the second, Portland caught fire, putting together an 11-0 run to take an eight-point advantage. The Broncos responded with an 11-0 run of their own, however, retaking the lead. The Pilots again put together a big 10-1 run to take the lead back, with the Broncos scoring a layup late to make it 37-33 Portland at the half.
Portland built on that strong end to the second quarter, conceding a bucket but then outscoring the Broncos 8-1 the first four minutes of the third quarter. The Broncos clawed their way back from behind with an 8-0 run, bringing the game within one point. A pair of late Lainey Spear jumpers helped the Pilots get some separation, as they held a 52-49 lead heading into the final period.
The final quarter saw the Pilots go cold and the Broncos score 10 straight points, putting Portland down seven with just under seven minutes to play. Portland closed the gap to three points but couldn't fend off the penetration from the Broncos. Santa Clara pulled off the road victory, hitting their final six free throws for a 77-66 win.
